The global power industry experienced a 62% decline in the number of artificial intelligence-related patent applications in Q3 2022 compared with the previous quarter. The total number of artificial intelligence-related grants rose by 2% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Artificial Intelligence in Power – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.
Notably, the number of artificial intelligence-related patent applications in the power industry was 282 in Q3 2022, versus 744 in the prior quarter.
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that State Gridof China filed the most artificial intelligence patents within the power industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 29 artificial intelligence-related patents in the quarter, compared with 177 in the previous quarter. It was followed by China Southern Power Grid with 26 artificial intelligence patent filings, Siemens (13 filings), and ABB (10 filings) in Q3 2022.
The largest share of artificial intelligence related patent filings in the power industry in Q3 2022 was in China with 32%, followed by the US (20%) and South Korea (10%). The share represented by China was 31% lower than the 64% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
