Swedish renewable energy company Vattenfall has selected Danish wind turbine maker Vestas as the preferred turbine supplier for the UK’s 1.38GW Norfolk Vanguard West project.

Under the preferred supplier agreement, Vestas will supply 92 V236-15 MW offshore wind turbines.

Vestas president and CEO Henrik Andersen stated: “Vattenfall and Vestas’ shared purpose and values form a great foundation for a long and strong partnership within offshore wind, and it is an immense pleasure to sign and announce these agreements.

“The agreements are the result of close and positive negotiations between two partners as well as the positive changes the UK Government has announced for next year’s auction.”

In November 2023, the UK Government announced plans to raise the maximum price for offshore wind projects by 66% for its next renewables auction round, to be held in March 2024.

The two companies have signed exclusivity agreements for the Norfolk Vanguard East and Norfolk Boreas projects, with a joint installed capacity of 2.76GW.

The two projects will feature up to 184 Vestas V236-15 MW turbines.

The agreements will advance the companies’ collaboration and offshore wind business towards 2030.

Vestas will also service the projects under long-term operations and maintenance contracts with the Swedish company.

Vattenfall wind business area head Helene Bistrom stated: “The agreement with Vestas is another important milestone for the Norfolk offshore wind zone.

“Vestas is a long-standing partner of Vattenfall, and we thank them for their continued engagement. The Norfolk zone will play a vital role in the UK’s energy transition as well as bringing investment into the sector and the region.”

In December 2023, Vestas secured an 186MW wind turbine contract from Nordic energy company Ilmatar.
